Bal Harbour Shops has unveiled its West Shops expansion, adding approximately 200,000 square feet of retail and dining space to the family-owned shopping destination in Bal Harbour. In a November 3 announcement, the property reported that the new wing is fully leased, with store openings continuing through 2028.
The West Shops will accommodate 30 luxury boutiques and flagship stores within the property’s open-air tropical setting. Announced newcomers include Tom Ford, KHAITE, Elie Saab and Boucheron, joining a tenant roster that includes Chanel, Prada, Gucci, Saint Laurent, Balenciaga and Brioni. The rollout also creates space for existing retailers to expand or relocate.
“This expansion is creating opportunity for new brands to join Bal Harbour Shops and making room for existing brands to relocate into larger spaces that reflect the scale and ambition of their businesses,” said Matthew Whitman Lazenby, president and CEO of Whitman Family Development.
The expansion comes as Bal Harbour Shops reports annual gross sales approaching $1 billion, an increase of 35 percent since 2020. According to the announcement, sales productivity ranges from $2,000 to $3,000 per square foot. The figures are reported by the property and reflect the broader shopping center, rather than sales generated by the newly opened wing.
Dining remains part of the property’s expansion strategy. The announcement highlights the return of Jeffrey Chodorow’s China Grill and Stephen Starr’s Slim’s, which opened earlier this year, alongside established restaurants Carpaccio, Makoto and Avenue 31 Café. Bal Harbour Shops reports nearly $70 million in annual dining revenue.
Separate from the West Shops opening, Whitman Family Development continues to propose a future mixed-use expansion with market-rate residences, workforce rental apartments, a boutique hotel and additional retail. The November announcement describes that development as proposed under Florida’s Live Local Act, rather than as an approved or completed component of the new retail wing.
PROFILEmiami previously covered the mixed-use proposal in January 2024. The latest announcement does not provide an approval milestone or construction start date for that separate project.
Founded by Stanley Whitman in 1965, Bal Harbour Shops remains family owned. Its landscaped, open-air setting incorporates tropical plants, orchids, koi ponds and palm trees, elements that continue into the West Shops addition.
