ICA Miami has selected Gensler to design and renovate its second building in the Miami Design District, unveiling plans for an expansion expected to open in late 2027. Announced November 5, the project centers on 23 NE 41st Street, a property the museum acquired in 2024 on the same block as its existing home.
The museum says the additional 30,000 square feet will double its facilities for programming. Eight galleries, divided equally between the first and second floors, will accommodate special exhibitions and ICA Miami’s first dedicated spaces for its permanent collection. The plans also include the Knight Foundation Gallery for New Media, where artists will explore emerging technologies and forms.

A flexible venue on the third floor will accommodate lectures, symposia, performances and other public programs. Gensler’s plans extend to the building’s entrance and facade, while the outdoor areas will incorporate shaded courtyards and sculptural landscapes. Together, the interior and exterior changes are intended to give the museum more space for exhibitions, education and public gathering.
ICA Miami said its entirely private $40 million capital campaign, which funded the 2024 acquisition and supports the design and renovation, is nearing completion. Early support has come from private foundations, individuals and the museum’s Board of Trustees. The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has also awarded a $5 million grant supporting ICA Miami’s digital innovation efforts.
Alex Gartenfeld, ICA Miami’s Irma and Norman Braman Executive Director and Chief Curator, said, “Gensler has fully embraced the goals of the project and the operational and programmatic needs that will complement our existing program and facilities.”
Founded in 2014, ICA Miami opened its current home at 61 NE 41st Street in 2017. The museum offers free admission and says it has welcomed more than 1 million visitors and supported more than 1,000 artists through exhibitions and acquisitions. The expansion will give its permanent collection dedicated space alongside a broader schedule of exhibitions and public programs.
