Inside The Exclusive Louis Vuitton X Frank Gehry Collaboration For Art Basel Miami Beach
At this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach 2023, Louis Vuitton presented a selection of the works that legendary Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry has produced during his wide-ranging and longstanding collaboration with the Maison. The specially designed pop-up experience in which the works were presented embodies Gehry’s trademark aesthetic and his constant experimentation with forms.
Wood and cardboard models that have always been central to the architect’s design process find their form in the scenography, while five enveloping sail-like mesh structures nod to Gehry’s 2014 window displays for the Maison. Organized into four themes dear to Frank Gehry – Architecture and Form, Material Exploration, Animals, and his Twisted Box creation for “Celebrating Monogram”– the objectson display include handbags, trunks, perfume bottles, original artworks, preparatory sketches, and architectural models.
The Louis Vuitton X Frank Gehry Art Basel Miami Beach pop-up served as the world premiere of Louis Vuitton x Frank Gehry, a limited-edition handbag collection. The collaborative capsule is based around three themes key to Frank Gehry’s long career – Architecture and Form, Material Exploration, and Animals – and features designs based upon the Maison’s iconic Capucines bags, the Twisted Box Trunk, and a remarkable Bear With Us Clutch, based upon Gehry’s 2014 Bear with Us sculpture.
Each bag exemplifies the unique combination of Frank Gehry’s design prowess and Louis Vuitton’s remarkable craft and savoir-faire, such as a Capucines Mini Blossom with its glass-like resin petals inspired by perfume bottles and hammered LV recalling the logo he created for the Fondation Louis Vuitton, the iconic building he designed in Paris; a Capucines MM Floating Fish with painstakingly worked leather marquetry inspired by the piscine lamps on display at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, and a Capucines MM Concrete Pockets whose innovative 3D cement-effect screen-printing gives the bag’s calfskin exterior the varied textures of Frank Gehry constructions.
Another highlight of the Maison’s Art Basel Miami Beach pop-up was the “A Tea Party for Louis” Trunk, the architect’s distinctive creation for the 200 Trunks, 200 Visionaries exhibition that celebrated Louis Vuitton’s 200th birthday. Based upon Lewis Carroll’s 1865 novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, his striking sculpture-trunk is a collection of eight arrestingly inventive figurines, each one resembling both a character in the book and the model of an imaginary Frank Gehry building. When brought together, the characters form what the architect describes as a tea party for the Maison’s founder.
Other Frank Gehry projects and artworks for Louis Vuitton on show included his Les Extraits perfume bottles and their unique stoppers handcrafted in Murano, Italy, and the Flaconnier Les Extraits designed to transport them, as well as a selection of sketches and models, such as preparatory drawings for his work on the “Celebrating Monogram” project and maquettes exploring his design for the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris. These were accompanied by videos illustrating Gehry’s most famous collaborations with Louis Vuitton, and a painted portrait of the architect by French artist Jean-Philippe Delhomme.
Following its successful initial presence at Art Basel in Basel, Paris and Miami Beach in 2022, Louis Vuitton is proud to have served as a global Associate Partner of Art Basel Miami Beach 2023. This additional support further confirms the Maison’s close and committed relationship to the arts, one that began nearly a century ago when Gaston-Louis Vuitton, the founder’s grandson, began commissioning artists to collaborate with Louis Vuitton on advertisements and perfume bottles.
Since 1988, Louis Vuitton has continued this legacy by collaborating with some of the biggest names in modern art and design, including Sol LeWitt, James Rosenquist, Cesar, and Olafur Eliasson. It has curated exhibitions by artists such as Sophie Calle, Dan Flavin, Alberto Giacometti and Gerhard Richter in its Espaces Louis Vuitton, instore contemporary art spaces, and has also created innovative large-scale global art projects, such as the 2022 collaboration with Yayoi Kusama, and a capsule collection of bags, shoes, accessories, luggage, and fragrances. The Fondation Louis Vuitton, which opened in October 2014 in Paris, embodies the commitment of LVMH – and Louis Vuitton in particular – to corporate philanthropy in support of the arts and creative endeavours. The building, commissioned from Frank Gehry, is already recognised as an emblematic example of 21st-century architecture and has already welcomed millions of visitors from the entire world.

The famed “Woodsong” home at 3003 Seminole Street in Miami’s hot Coconut Grove neighborhood has sold for $4.2 million. Featuring a stunning tropical modern design, surrounded by lush vegetation and a fresh-water pond, this home is truly one-of-a-kind. The buyer Pamela Day, developer and founder of Crimson Holdings, now owns a one-of-a-kind home that was built, and lived-in, by one of Miami's most iconic architects, Alfred Browning Parker. Known for his environmentally sensitive designs, this tropical modern home is one of his few remaining masterpieces and is affectionately named "Woodsong" as it is engulfed in mahogany wood, both inside and out. Compass represented both sides of the deal with Karina Reyes represented the seller Hans Feringa and Monique Feringa and Megan Probst represented the buyer.
The uniquely designed “Woodsong” home is made up of three distinct "pods" which are connected by an exterior breezeway featuring a 90-foot lazy river runs throughout the property. The backyard contains a sauna and a swimmable, freshwater pond.
The 4-bedroom, 5-bathroom, 2,600 square foot house is clad with solid Honduran mahogany, a valuable, high quality, durable wood that is one of the only genuine mahogany species that is grown today. Several floor-to-ceiling hurricane-impact windows and skylights, the home allows for an abundance of natural light and views into the botanical landscape. The “Woodsong” home is located in Miami's hottest neighborhood, Coconut Grove, with walkability to parks, the bay, and restaurants/bars.
As an ardent art collector and owner of multiple real estate assets in South Florida, Day's immediate connection to Woodsong was profound, perceiving it as a true work of art. Despite her extensive experience as a developer spanning over two decades, Day has no intention of altering Woodsong. Instead, she envisions herself as a guardian of the property, committed to preserving the architectural significance and original vision of Alfred Browning Parker, the esteemed architect behind Woodsong. Day regards it as Parker's magnum opus and aims to showcase it as such, carrying forward his legacy.

Miami Design District Reveals Its Next Iconic Office Building 'The Ursa' Designed By Arquitectonica
The Miami Design District has revealed the next iconic building to come to life in the dynamic neighborhood, The Ursa. Located at 30 NE 39th Street, The Ursa will be the first new Class A office building in the neighborhood. The fifteen-story building was designed by Arquitectonica, who was charged with creating world-class architecture that fits within the creative neighborhood.
The Miami Design District has revealed the next iconic building to come to life in the dynamic neighborhood, The Ursa. Located at 30 NE 39th Street, The Ursa will be the first new Class A office building in the neighborhood. The fifteen-story building was designed by Arquitectonica, who was charged with creating world-class architecture that fits within the award-winning creative neighborhood, and generous, modern spaces for companies inventing the future.
With museum-quality exterior public art and interior art and furniture by Daniel Arsham, The Ursa makes an artform out of office space and is in keeping with the ethos and energy of the Miami Design District. At the same time, the state-of-the-art facility offers businesses all the amenities and conveniences expected in the modern workplace -- all within a neighborhood that features the best in shopping, dining, and culture in Miami. Leasing is now underway.
“We are thrilled to be bringing The Ursa to the Miami Design District. Integrating state-of-the-art workspaces into the neighborhood has always been a part of our plan. People want to work in centers of creativity, culture, and commerce; and the District really provides the type of environment where innovation can take flight,” said Craig Robins, Chief Executive Officer and President of Dacra. “Beyond providing office space in the neighborhood, The Ursa as a structure itself adds to the beauty of the Miami Design District. Arquitectonica has created an iconic, elegant, and functional building that highlights both art and natural beauty. We couldn’t be happier with the design and know that businesses will find a special place to call home within The Ursa.”
“The Ursa is an exceptional addition to the Miami Design District. In keeping with our development approach, our emphasis was creating something that truly enhanced the built environment and added to the overall experience of being in this unique community. Bringing a dynamic office building offering to the Miami Design District is an important next step in the neighborhood’s evolution and we are so excited to watch it unfold. We know the District has so much to offer and businesses want to be a part of what we have built here. We cannot wait to welcome them,” said Mathieu Le Bozec, Managing Partner, L Catterton Real Estate.
The Ursa is being developed by Miami Design District Associates, a joint venture between Dacra, L Catterton Real Estate, and Brookfield Properties. The fifteen-story building houses ten floors of approximately 180,000 square feet of office space, with efficient floor plates that embody a center core design. There are also two retail spaces available on the ground floor. The building has abundant outdoor space. Each floor has its own private balcony, and floor-to-ceiling glass windows which provide unobstructed 360-degree views and seamlessly connect the building to the neighborhood. The building also has a rooftop garden deck (indoor/outdoor) accessible to all tenants. Verdant landscaping on each level is by Island Planning Corporation (IPC).
“The building will mark the western gateway to the Miami Design District in a design that combines Miami’s outdoor living with a boutique office building. The District not only has one of the most impressive collections of art and architecture, but also is lined with a stunning native landscape palette throughout. The tree-lined streets of the neighborhood served as the inspiration for bringing the landscape into the building as a series of stepped planters that wrap around the building alongside terraces for the floor-to-ceiling glass office spaces. We are excited to work with Dacra and the team to bring the project to the Design District,” said Raymond Fort, Senior Associate, Arquitectonica.
In keeping with the neighborhood’s commitment to art, culture, and design, The Ursa provides a unique office experience with museum-quality art. Daniel Arsham, famed contemporary artist and founder of architecture and design company Snarkitecture, has created new monumental site-specific artworks to be incorporated into the façade of The Ursa. The works are inspired by sculptural reliefs from Greek and Roman Antiquity, such as sarcophagi, and the walls of the Parthenon enlarged to a monumental scale of up to 36 feet in height. The interior lobby of The Ursa will also feature artworks and furniture specifically designed for the location. Arsham has a long history with the Miami Design District as he attended the Design and Architecture Senior High School (DASH) and was provided his first studio space in the District by Dacra. He has also collaborated with brands that have flagship stores in the District like Tiffany’s and Dior.
“Having an almost life-long personal presence and relationship within the Design District it’s an honor to be invited to collaborate with Dacra on The Ursa. The integration of the surrounding tropical landscape with world-class architecture, contemporary art, and design sums up, to me, what is special about Miami and this neighborhood specifically. I expect this building to become a landmark to the city and an important example of how art and architecture can coexist in exciting new ways,” said Daniel Arsham.
State-of-the-art technology will be integrated throughout the building, with 24-7 onsite security and property management services. The Ursa also benefits from its ideal location and from being a part of the larger Miami Design District ecosystem. In the Miami Design District, tenants have access to over 20 restaurants, 170 retail stores, leading cultural institutions and community programming all with direct accessibility to I-95, and easy connectivity to Miami Beach and surrounding markets.
The Ursa is expected to be completed by fall 2024 with the first tenants moving in by winter 2024.

Leading global design firm Stantec designed the eight-story Avalon Doral, located along one of the main corridors of the City of Doral at 3940 N.W. 79th Avenue. Featuring a central courtyard surrounded by 350 residential units and a seven-story, 595-space parking garage, the development sits adjacent to the planned 80,000-square-foot retail development known as Atrium at Doral. Stantec served as the architect and engineer on the project.
“Avalon Doral’s design was inspired by the duality of the urban and natural environments, allowing both to exist simultaneously,” said Andrew Burnett, senior principal at Stantec. “The building’s stylish units, amenities, and proximity to the city life are balanced by the lush, tropical landscape and open-air courtyard, creating a serene environment.”
The courtyard serves as the central gathering space for residents, with a resort-style pool, cabanas, and a BBQ area surrounded by ample green vegetation. The courtyard also connects to a pedestrian plaza, bike path, and dog park.
The light colors used in the building’s faceted exterior were selected to create a modern, tropical feel, while the facets subtly change in color as the sun moves throughout the day, breathing life and movement into the building. The entry pavilion and the activated spaces use warm wood tones, steel, and glass to contrast the courtyard walls and create a streetscape that complements the adjoining retail buildings. The entrance of the building is glass that has been integrated into a small plaza and connects to the future retail development.
Avalon Doral’s residential units range from studios to one-, two-, and three-bedroom units with floor-to-ceiling windows, balconies, and modern kitchens, featuring quartz countertops and stainless-steel appliances. Other amenities include a clubhouse, craft room, gym, bicycle storage, dog wash area, and a lobby lounge that includes a bar and pool table.
Avalon Doral is designed to achieve Silver Certification through the Florida Green Building Coalition.
Stantec is ranked among the top 10 architecture firms by Architectural Record. The Miami Design District has achieved the prestigious LEED Gold certification, becoming the first neighborhood in the world to achieve the Gold level (LEED ND: Built v4 Gold). Miami Design District marks the third neighborhood in the world to achieve LEED certification, which means “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design,” for Neighborhood Development (version 4 Built). The trendy, luxury shopping, art and entertainment enclave is setting the bar for sustainable development in communities across the country.
Miami Design District is home to a number of luxury fashion houses, art galleries, fine dining experiences, and cafés. The open-air, pedestrian-friendly neighborhood, known for its many distinct and artistic façades, notably boasts a highly energy-efficient infrastructure.
Amongst the many sustainability aspects of the neighborhood’s redevelopment focus, several to highlight include: the re-infiltration of rainwater and restored natural hydrology made possible by the additions of expansive vegetated and high-albedo white roofs and tree-shaded streets, enhanced walkable streets and pedestrian walkways that promote community connectivity and encourage visitors to spend more time outdoors, and the integration of innovations from other Green Building Standards, including the WELL's feature "Beauty and Mindful Design," which incorporates different design elements and artwork that lend to a more calming environment.
In 2011 Island Planning Corporation (IPC) was brought in by DACRA and L Catterton Real Estate to design the Landscape Masterplan for the neighborhood. Miami Design District was inspired by the worlds leading shopping districts including Fifth Avenue and Rodeo Drive. IPC helped to establish a sophisticated visual continuity throughout the neighborhood, with mature canopy-covered streets and walkways, sculptural specimen trees, and extensive rooftop gardens.
Spinnaker Group, one of the most respected leaders in the green-building movement, provided LEED for Neighborhood Development consulting and energy modeling for this distinctive project, marking the neighborhood’s 4th earned LEED certification. Spinnaker Group also provided LEED Consulting, Building Commissioning and Energy Modeling for three other landmark projects within the Miami Design District including the Garden Building, featuring an intensive rooftop garden lounge designed by Island Planning Corporation (LEED Gold certified in 2013) - Palm Court, featuring underground parking to allow for a large open courtyard above for pedestrians and artwork, such as the Buckminster Fuller’s futuristic Fly’s Eye Dome (LEED Gold certified in 2015) - and most recently, Paradise Plaza, featuring intensive green roofs and underground parking with a large plaza above for pedestrians and artwork (LEED Gold certified in 2020).
